Climbing Mount Shasta

Topped by snow and glaciers, Mount Shasta rises up above everything else when you approach it from the north.

As soon as I saw it, I wanted to be up there. We were coming south from Oregon, after driving across the country from Michigan. A detour to northern California before heading home seemed like a good idea to both of us.

"I wonder if we could climb it?" I asked. John just nodded his head quietly, agreeing not to the climb, but to the fact that he was wondering the same thing. I checked the map. Mount Shasta is 14,162 feet above sea level. I liked the idea of climbing that high.

"Have you ever climbed a mountain," John asked me. I thought about it for a while. "Not really. A lot of hills though."

Mount Shasta City

"Oh yes," the old woman at the visitor's center told us, "people climb Mount Shasta all the time." John pointed out the glaciers on the map she had given us. "Oh, well, did you bring crampons and ice axes?" John looked at me, and I could only say, "I've heard of these things."

We did have some gear: backpacks, sleeping bags, and a tent. John had good hiking boots, but mine were more like high-top shoes. Neither of us had ever used crampons or an ice axe, so we went the few blocks across town to see what the guy at the climbing store had to say.

"Have you done any climbing before?" he asked us.

"A little," I answered, remembering the buildings we used to climb on as teenagers, and the rocks we had recently scrambled up in Oregon. I figured we were ready for Mount Shasta.

"Well, you can't put crampons on those boots," he said to John, "and you sure can't put them on those," he told me, shaking his head at my shoes. Crampons apparently need rigid boots - our mountaineering lesson of the day. We could rent them, but only if we rented real mountaineering boots also. "And you'll need ice axes, of course." I felt a pain in my wallet.

Backpacking On Mount Shasta (Too Poor For Climbing)

A speeding ticket in North Dakota had strained the budget, and Mount Shasta was another detour from the route and the budget. We could, we decided, hike up the mountain and do a little backpacking. Still, I had to ask, "Do people climb Shasta without gear?" The store owner realized that the sale was lost.

"It's been done," he answered impatiently.

"It's been done," I reminded John as we drove up the road to Mount Shasta. He didn't answer, which was a good sign. I watched the Pine trees go by, and absentmindedly poked a finger through a hole in my shoe.

"Old Ski Bowl Trailhead," John said. I looked over at the sign. "7,900 feet." We were at the trailhead, along with forty other cars, and it was early enough to hit the trail.

Mount Shasta Poop Bags

We looked at the registration forms, and had a decision to make. There was a $10 fee to hike or climb above "Horse Camp," at 8,400 feet. John pointed to a pile of paper bags, each with a handful of cat litter in it, and a plastic bag to put it in. These were for carrying our excrement off the mountain, a requirement above 10,000 feet. That clinched it. We put $10 each in the envelope and dropped it in the slot. We couldn't pass up the opportunity to poop in a bag in the mountains. I took two for myself, in case of good luck.

An easy trail took us to the hut and spring at Horse Camp. We filled our water bottles. The dayhikers looked up at the mountain through cameras, while the climbers cooked noodles and discussed weather reports. They looked at my shoes and smiled at each other when I mentioned we might climb Mount Shasta.

After Horse Camp the trail gets steeper and rockier. The trees end at about 8,500 feet, leaving only grasses, flowers, and other tundra plants. Then the trail gets lost in the rocks just before the steep climb up to Helen Lake.

Wind And Rain At Helen Lake

There is no lake. Helen lake is a more-or-less level area of snow and ice. At the edge, overlooking Horse Camp far below, there are dusty clearings in the rocks where the climbers camp. We found an empty spot and we set up camp. The wind was howling. We were at 10,440 feet.

About the time the rain started, I realized it might have been a bad idea to talk John into bringing only a tarp, instead of the tent. The edges pulled loose in the wind again and again, until we pinned down one side with heavy rocks, and wrapped the other side around us. Dust blew in, despite the tight wrap and rain. I was enjoying the adventure more than John, who was very quiet. So I talked until he fell asleep.

Climbing Mount Shasta

"Apparently they start very early," John grumbled. It was dark, but there were lights and noise from the tents around us. I stood up, and I saw lights on the mountain a thousand up. It was 5:30 a.m. Hmm... climbers start early. With that new insight, we packed our daypacks, hid our big backpacks in the rocks, and stepped onto the ice.

Helen Lake was a mile of ups and downs, through sun-dished ice. Then we reached the loose rock at the base of a steep slope, in Avalanche Gully. We started climbing Mount Shasta. an hour later, we quit.

"I can't do it," John gasped. "Can't get enough air." We were at about 11,000 feet, and we knew there was less oxygen, but this was the first time John had actually been this high on foot. I once drove higher in Colorado, but apparently driving wasn't a strenuous enough for me to notice the thinner air. I noticed it here. We both did. We sat down and rested for a minute.

"Are you sure," I asked. He was - I wasn't. It was light now, and John didn't see any problem hiking down the four hours to the car alone. I would go on to the summit, and then come back down by evening. I had to continue. Mount Shasta was my first mountain, and I hadn't even used the poop bag yet.

Altitude Sickness

The "Red Bank" is a line of broken cliffs above Avalanche Gully. I scrambled, climbed, slipped on ice, and eventually found a way up and over. Then there were long steep slopes covered in loose rocks, with a few bamboo sticks marking the way. My route converged with that of the other climbers, who had come up the snow-slope route with crampons and ice axes.

After much climbing, I finally made it to the summit, which is called Misery hill, because it isn't actually the summit. It just seems like it should be. There was still a mile of snow to cross, and then more rocky terrain. One snow field had three-foot-high peaks covering it, like a huge merange pie.

I rested a moment, and realized I'd been hearing a new sound. Bang! Bang! Bang! It was the inside of my head, which had never been so loud before. Hmm...interesting. I got used to the noise and pain after an hour or so.

I got used to the smell of sulphur too. Mount Shasta, it turns out, is a volcano. When John Muir climbed it more than a hundred years earlier, he had to huddle next to the hot sulphur gas vents to survive a night near the peak. He was alternately freezing and burning.

At The Top Of Mount Shasta

"So this is the top?" I mumbled lamely to the guy who had just told me the John Muir story. Clouds, and smoke from forest fires, obscured the view in every direction, but it felt good to be so high, and down to the east, I saw my first glacier, a few hundred feet below.

"You can write your name in the register there," the guy told me, pointing to something in the rocks. Guestbooks on top of mountains? Another lesson for the day. I signed in, wrote some comment, and started down the mountain.

Sun cups, or whatever they call those depresions in the snow, fill with water in the warm afternoon sun - another discovery. I'd climb out of one ten-foot-wide bowl and slide into the pond at the bottom of the next. This was the pattern until I thankfully reached the ankle-twisting mile of rocks piled up below Helen Lake. Climbing down, I realized, is more difficult than climbing up, or at least more dangerous.

I found the trail, my headache disappeared, I reached the road, where John was waiting. By evening we were driving towards Michigan, Mount Shasta hidden in the clouds and smoke behind us. Oh, and yes, I did get to use the poop bag. Somewhere around 11,500 feet, I think, which I remembered when I was looking through my pack. "Pull over at the nearest garbage can," I told John.

Coming up next is the Clifton Beach on Cape Town, South Africa. One of the most amazing sceneries can be found there. Imagine enjoying the beach with the gorgeous Table Mountain as a backdrop. There's never anything quite like that on a beach. And if you're looking for a natural and exotic beach, you might want to try out Anse de Argent beach in Seychelles. The Life and Work of Eddie Dean: I Wonder Why You Said Goodbye Friday, December 10, 2010

The Life and Work of Eddie Dean Eddie Dean (7/9/1907~3/4/1999): An era ended with the death of Eddie Dean in West Lake Village, Calif. The 91-year-old Dean, who died of emphysema, was the last of the great cowboy singers. Eddie was a western singer and actor whom Roy Rogers and Gene Autry termed the best cowboy singer of all time. Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Rex Allen may have attained greater financial success and notoriety and all had fine voices in their own right, but they all envied Eddie's voice. Dean was best known for "I Dreamed of A Hill-Billy Heaven" (1955), which became an even greater hit in 1961 for Tex Ritter. Dean was born Edgar Dean Glossup in the rural community of Posey in Hopkins County, Texas, northwest of Sulphur Springs. His father was a teacher, who encouraged Dean to launch a professional singing career. At the age of sixteen, Dean performed on the Southern gospel circuit with the Vaughan and then the VO Stamps quartets. Dean and his brother, Jimmie Dean moved to Chicago and performed together on WLS Radio's National Barn Dance. They also did work from a radio station in Yankton, South Dakota. In 1934, Dean appeared in his first film in the role of Sam in Manhattan Love Song. In 1937, Dean relocated to Hollywood, California, and began appearing in western films, often with Mississippi native Roscoe Ates (1894~1962) in the role of Soapy Jones. Eddie appeared in over 30 western movies, including some with Gene Autry. The majority of his films were ...

Good Rental History: Why this is Critical in Repairing Your Credit Monday, December 6, 2010

We talked previously about establishing a good rental history. You must have two (2) years of on time payments. No exceptions. Some of you reading this may think this is the simplest part of the "repair effort", but many times there's a situation where the apartment manager has a bone to pick with a tenant and causes a lot of grief. We've seen everything from illegal eviction notices to bogus damage claims. What can you do to make sure you are protected? You can go to any library and obtain a copy of your states statutes regarding tenant rights. I suggest you become familiar with them in order to protect your rights.

The best way to avoid any drama is to establish a good realtionship with your apartment manager now. One suggestion is ask if there's anything you can do around the complex to help out. Something as simple as picking up loose trash can make a huge impression. If there is an issue the key to resolving it is to address it immediately.

Most apartment owners or managers want to know your future plans. If you tell them you are renting for a year or two with the intention of buying a home, they will probably work with you. After all, you are letting them know that your apartment will be coming available for rental in the future without them having to go through any hassles such as evictions.

You are going to have to put forth the effort if you are serious about getting a broker to eventually find you a mortgage loan. Good rental practices work in any state, so no matter if you live in Florida or South Dakota it important to get off on the right foot.

Pheasant Hunting in Ohio - List Of Top Bird Hunting Locations In Ohio! Thursday, December 2, 2010

While Ohio may not top a pheasant hunter's list of places to hunt in his lifetime, with preservation efforts and new hunting land popping up everywhere in recent years, it is fast becoming a Midwest pheasant hunting destination.

While the top places for upland bird hunting are usually South Dakota, Kansas, Alabama, and others, Ohio has seen a resurgence in this popular sport. Previous to this the only sportsmen hunting pheasant in Ohio were Ohio natives themselves. With one out of every seven people hunting or fishing in Ohio, many local economies have come to depend on the sportsmen for their livelihood. There are 33,015 jobs supplied directly by Ohio sportsmen, which is more than what Ohio State University provides at 26,000. The jobs sportsmen provide equal to $823 million dollars worth of salaries and a state tax revenue of $139.5 million. To add to that, Ohio sportsmen spent $1.7 billion, which exceeds the combined receipts of the films Titanic, Star Wars, and E.T. at $1.49 billion.

To help maintain a healthy pheasant population, Ohio recently released more than 15,000 pheasants in 29 public hunting areas. Ohio pheasant season also remains open later than most, into January. The state has also added an additional 5,000 acres of hunting land available in the state's southeast region. This is also good news for Ohio turkey hunters who gained 15,896 acres in Vinton Country as a working forest and outdoor recreation area.

Southeast Ohio is home to Hocking Hills, a great hunting destination not just for the pheasant population, but also for the striking landscapes, woodlands, and various vegetation and outcroppings. Some of the best spots to take advantage of this scenery are Zaleski State Forest, Tar Hollow State Park, Wayne National Forest, and Hocking State Forest. With meandering trails, soaring cliffs, hidden caves, and more than 10,000 acres for the hunter to take advantage of, Ohio is a first class hunter's paradise. An Ohio pheasant hunt also makes a great weekend trip as it's so centrally located to many of the Midwest states.

Be sure to check local hunting regulations and license requirements while planning your trip to Ohio pheasant country. Bag limits change from year to year, as do specific dates pertaining to hunting season. As always, exercise safety and caution when out in the field; be sure to wear orange visible to other hunters, and for those under the age of 15, an adult 18 years or older is required.

Animal Abuse - When Is It Going To Be Taken Seriously?

You've probably heard the names Bundy, Dahmer, Gacy; all names of notorious killers and what do they all have in common? They started out as animal abusers. What about the names; Kip Kinkle and Luke Woodham or Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold? Not quite so well known except in some circles and in the minds and memories of their victims and families. These two pairs of names belong to teenage boys who went on killing sprees, the second pair are the infamous Columbine High School killers. What do they all have in common? They all tortured and killed animals, sometimes bragging to their friends. Now what about the names; Dasha Lombard, James Manzanares, and Nicholas Stogdon? Probably not unless you live in Alamogordo, MN and either know them or were paying attention to the news in late spring in this year, 2007. They are three 'children,' aged 15, 14 and 13, at the time, who found a wandering puppy and decided to have some fun. They taped the dog's muzzle shut with packing tape, stabbed her with a knife and screwdriver and proceeded to drop a 40 lb concrete block on her. When questioned about it, the response was, "It was just a f------ dog!" These 'children' were completely unaffected by the torture they inflicted on this innocent and defenseless animal.

And this was not the first brush with the law for any of them. These three teens are not new to their antisocial behavior. Lombard was charged with having a deadly weapon on school property, charged with criminal damage to property when she allegedly spray-painted an elementary school playground, previous charges include shoplifting and resisting, evading and obstructing an officer as well as numerous incidents of trouble at school, usually involving verbally abusing teachers. Manzanares' priors include shoplifting (including one incident where he was with co-defendant Stogdon), disorderly conduct, larceny, receiving stolen property and burglary. Stogdon was charged several times with shoplifting; twice for battery on a household member; for running away; and for burglary.

There was a case in Macon, GA earlier this year in which three boys, two 14 year olds and a 13 year old burned two dogs to death. Prior to this they had been in trouble with the law and after their arrests but while they were in their parents' custody, they proceeded to commit other crimes. Each of these boys was sentenced to 60 days detention. That's it, just 60 days detention!

Then we have one of the latest to add to this list of horrors by 'children' against animals. A 5 month old Chihuahua mix, Tobey, was stolen out of its own yard in Guadalupe County in Texas by three 'children.' The 12, 14 and 16 year old boys took this little puppy to an abandoned house and proceeded to throw the puppy out of a second story window several times until its back legs were broken, hung it in a tree by those mangled and broken legs, beat it with a nail studded board, lit it on fire and finally cut it head off. The boys were arrested at the scene and when questioned, they showed absolutely no remorse for the torture they inflicted on this tiny puppy. At most, these three boys will remain in juvenile detention until they are nineteen.

These are just a few of the many, many incidences out there and these are just juvenile cases. You can bet in the future you will be hearing about some of them again. Their names and faces will grace the front pages and be the leading story on newscasts and their crimes will not be against just animals but against people.

Every day I hear stories of animal abusers getting sentences so lenient that people hearing about it are just shock and incensed;

Charles J. Friel III, 22, of Allen Street in Philadelphia beat a dog that was in his care and left it chained to a tree with skull and rib fractures to suffer and die a horrible death last year and was sentenced to probation.

John W. Meyer, 41, of Shotkoski Drive of Hoffman Estates, IL, killed a puppy for urinating on the rug. He threw a 7 month old, 4 lb Chihuahua 14 foot across the room against a wall then slapped the tiny dog so hard he broke one of its legs, all of this in front of two children and he was sentenced to probation.

Marlene S. Diaz, 24, of Cooper Street in Manchester, Connecticut had a tiny little Chihuahua locked in the basement for so long and under such terrible conditions that when the dog way found after an anonymous tip by a Connecticut Natural Gas employee, she weighed about a third of what she should have weighed. She was nothing but a skeleton covered in skin and a vet had no other option but to euthanize the dog due to the severity of her condition. Diaz was sentenced to probation.

Maryanne Adams, of Greenwood Lake, NY starved a dog to death. A beautiful St. Bernard husky mix that she adopted from the humane society was left in the yard, no food, no water, freezing cold, to die a horrible death. And her sentence, community service! Warwick Town Justice Daniel Coleman didn't even care enough to give her probation, let alone a real sentence!

These are just a few cases in which the criminals were actually identified and convicted. They are all a matter of public record. But what about all the cases of animal abuse and cruelty in which no one is ever identified? The monsters out there still walking the streets free to inflict their atrocities on other animals or to work their way up to human victims.

Laws that target animal abusers far too often are either too lenient, too vague or unenforced. There are still 7 states that do not even have felony provisions for cruelty to animals; Alaska, Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Utah. There are still two states which do not have felony provisions for dog fighting; Idaho and Wyoming.

These are not opinions, these are facts! And it is also a fact that there is a strong and indisputable correlation between animal abuse and interpersonal violence. This is one of the biggest reasons that animal abusers need to be dealt with harshly, not just for the cruelties inflicted upon innocent and defenseless animals, which is certainly bad enough, but for the cruelties that many of these abusers will go on to inflict on human victims.

Isn't it past time for our judicial system and our lawmakers to start taking animal abuse seriously? It's time to stand up and speak out for those without the voice to speak for themselves! It's time to demand justice for the innocent victims!

Will you sit back and like so many people, just ignore it because you think it doesn't involve you or will you stand up and take action? Don't wait until it's too late and it's your beloved pet or maybe your child, spouse, parent or family member who is affected. Write, call, email and fax your legislators and demand change. Isn't it time to take animal abuse seriously?

Foreclosure Law Thursday, November 25, 2010

Even if you have suspected that your home would go into foreclosure, perhaps you were misinformed and believed you had to wait until you received a notice of default from your lender before you could do anything. Maybe even now that you have received the notice, you are still stunned and paralyzed with the fear of losing your home.

No matter what your situation may be at the moment, if you have just received a notice of default and are facing a foreclosure, now is an excellent time to get started on understanding the foreclosure laws that apply to your particular situation and to begin seeking help from professionals who can help to end foreclosure proceedings against your home and restore your home loan to a proper state of payment. Most importantly, you can achieve a peace of mind and return to sleeping at nights knowing that your home is not in jeopardy of being taken from you.

It cannot be overstated that foreclosure law is different from state to state. For example time frames for each state are as follows:

Alabama: 49-74, Alaska: 105, Arizona: 90+, Arkansas: 70, California: 117, Colorado: 145, Connecticut: 62, Delaware: 170-210, District of Columbia: 47, Florida: 135, Georgia: 37, Hawaii: 220, Idaho: 150, Illinois: 300, Indiana: 261, Iowa: 160, Kansas: 130, Kentucky: 147, Louisiana: 180, Maine: 240, Maryland: 46, Massachusetts: 75, Michigan: 60, Minnesota: 90-100, Mississippi: 90, Missouri: 60, Montana: 150, Nebraska: 142, Nevada: 116, New Hampshire: 59, new Jersey: 270, New Mexico: 180, New York: 445, North Carolina: 110, North Dakota: 150, Ohio: 217, Oklahoma: 186, Oregon: 150, Pennsylvania: 270, Rhode Island: 62, South Carolina: 150, South Dakota: 150, Tennessee: 40-45, Texas: 27, Utah: 142, Vermont: 95, Virginia: 45, Washington: 135, West Virginia: 60-90, Wisconsin: 290 and Wyoming: 60.

Just as each state has a different time frame, the laws that govern the particular state are different from the next state as well. There is no way to list all of the different laws that are applicable in their respective states. Even if it were possible to list all of the laws here, it would be impossible to keep the listing current as laws can change from state to state and year to year, depending on the state's government and legislation.

Both judicial and non judicial forms of foreclosure regulations are used from state to state. Likewise, the sale publication and redemption period can vary, including some states where the court decides what the redemption period will be. There are many different web sites that offer some general information about foreclosure law for each state. These sites should not substitute for learning about the foreclosure law in the state applicable where the property is that you are concerned with.

Although foreclosure is a lender option to allow the lender to gain back the property or cash for the property, foreclosure law is designed to help the homeowner take advantage of the opportunities that exist with foreclosure time frames and various other laws within each state that work to help the homeowner stop foreclosure before losing their home.

Burden Of Proof In Special Education Due Process Sunday, November 21, 2010

Are you the parent of a child with autism that has struggled to get them an appropriate education? Have you considered filing for due process for your child with a learning disability? Have you wondered who has the burden of proof, in a due process hearing? In 2005 The US Supreme Court heard a case on burden of proof in due process; the case was 546 US Schaffer v. Weast. This article will discuss burden of proof after the Supreme Court case Schaffer vs. Weast.

The question before the court on this case was At an administrative hearing (due process) assessing the appropriateness of a IEP, which party bears the burden of persuasion? The justices ruled that the burden of proof in a due process hearing challenging an IEP, is placed upon the party seeking relief, in other words the party that filed.

The reason this case made it all the way to the Supreme Court is because Maryland, where this case originated, did not have a regulation stating who had the burden of proof. 10 States place the burden of proof at a due process hearing on the school district. These states are: Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Washington DC, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, and West Virginia. These states are not affected by this ruling

17 States place the burden of proof on the party that files for a due process hearings. These states are: Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. These states are not affected by this ruling

The states that are affected by Schaffer vs. Weast are: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin. Some states on this list may have passed laws, since this ruling that put the burden of proof back on the school district. Check with your state board of education to see if a law was passed in your state. If it was not, the burden of proof is on the party that filed.

Schaffer vs. Weast did have one positive section of the ruling. Justice Sandra Day Oconnor wrote: School districts may also seek such hearings, as Congress clarified in the 2004 amendments. They may do so for example, if they wish to change an existing IEP because the parents do not consent, or if parents refuse to allow their child to be evaluated.

What this means, is that school districts are required to file for a due process hearing, if they wish to change a child's IEP. Before this, school districts were able to implement an IEP without a parents permission. The only way they could not, is if a parent filed for a due process hearing. Since the burden of proof has switched to the party that files in some states, this section is important.

For example: If you live in Idaho, a state that requires burden of proof on the party that files, and your school district wants to change your child's IEP, without your consent; they are required by Schaffer vs. Weast to file for a due process hearing; and thus bear the burden of proof.

If the school district did not file for a due process hearing and the parent was forced to, they could ask a hearing officer to shift the burden of proof to the school district. This means that the school district, would have to prove that the changes that they want to make to your child's IEP, are appropriate.

By understanding the burden of proof in a due process hearing, you will be able to make an informed decision about whether to file for a due process.

The 7 Essential Mistakes Every Bowhunter Should Avoid Tuesday, November 16, 2010

As sportsmen and hunters, it is absolutely necessary to learn from every mistake we make. If not, the next outing can be just as frustrating as the last. The following 7 mistakes are the seven most commonly made in the sport of bowhunting and should be recognized and overcome as early as possible.

Misjudging Distance

The number one reason a bowhunter misjudges their mark is because they misjudge distance. Precision and estimation are highly important, vital aspects of the sport and without them, it is impossible to be successful. Getting a good rangefinder is an essential first step to solving this problem. Mark your yardage whenever possible and practice often at home or at a range to get a better idea of how far you are standing from any given target.

Poorly Placed Shots

If you miss the right position on the animal, your hunt can become a horrible situation. A wounded, lost animal can haunt a hunter for the rest of the trip and ruin a perfectly good outing. It is necessary, both technically and ethically, to be able to hit the kill zone on an animal when bow hunting. This means, you should be able to recognize where the kill zone is as well as have the right degree of accuracy in your shots to hit that position. If you do not feel you can do this, you should reconsider hunting with a bow until you have enough practice under your belt to do so.

Mishandled Equipment

If your equipment is not well maintained, it will not serve you well in the field. Your shots will be less accurate, your distance will suffer, and you will have less of a good time while shooting. This means you should inspect your equipment as often as possible and perform routine maintenance. Tuning should be done before you go out every time, checking to ensure the center is trued, the screws and limb bolts are all in good position and that your sight pins are checked.

Too Much Weight

Speed is not the end all of bowhunting. In fact, too many hunters place a premium of being able to get high speed into their shots rather than any number of other possibilities. Accuracy is much more important and for that reason, your draw weight should be set well within your comfort level. The extra FPS you gain is not worth the loss of accuracy and comfort in your shots. Also, remember that conditions in the field can greatly diminish the effectiveness of a weight you have tested before hand.

Shooting Too Fast

If you grow too confident in your ability to shoot and release quickly on the run, you will probably have limited success. As a bowhunter, or any hunter for that matter, patience is absolutely vital. You want to get into and out of a stand as quickly as possible with minimal impact. If you can calmly and quietly handle your ground each time out, you will be much more effective than if you bolt in and try to overwhelm your game each time you go out.

Stand Placement

When you place your stand, a lot of importance is placed in the location, height, and time of its placement. If you are too low, too early, or in the wrong place, you will only spook your game and ruin a good position. Your placement will depend partly on your personal preference, but remember to make the right adjustments for your surroundings and the effect they will have on your game. Anywhere between 14 and 18 feet is ideal, providing enough range to keep from spooking your next quarry and with enough freedom to move if necessary.

Moving Too Much

If you move too much in your stand, you will not be successful. You must be willing to stand quietly, patiently, and as still as possible while waiting. Deer are incredibly adept at picking up movement - it is a survival instinct. If you set off those senses, they will bolt. Always keep an arrow knocked when on a stand so that you can minimize movement before a shot.

The right balance of common sense and preparation can result in the perfect hunting trips and the right shots almost every time for you. Be aware of what is happening around you, do not over adjust, move, or grow impatient, and you can avoid many of the most common mistakes made by bowhunters.

For Baby Boomers - A Car is a Luxury That They Can Do Without! Monday, October 25, 2010

Yes, that is true depending on just where you live, and where you work, and how you and your family uses the family car...

Many have talked about the price of gas in Western Europe and how much more it is in comparison with that of the US, but they do not tell you about other options they have for transportation. If you look at the size of a Western Europe and at the size of our New England states you will find that they are both about the same. Also, you will find that both have good transportation sources. Now look at most of the states west of the Mississippi and you will find a different transportation requirement. If you live in place like Montana, Idaho, North and South Dakota you will definitely have a different need for your car or truck.

Baby Boomers have definitely come to a crossroads in this country when it comes to our vAhicles, car specifically. With the price of gas, and the impact that it is having on us all, boomers need to think about our transportation requirements. We can buy a new car with better gas mileage and greater reliability. Or we can buy a used car with fewer miles on it and possibly greater reliability than the car that we are driving.

Boomers, would it surprise you to know that most of the car on the road today has better than 80,000 miles on the odometer and are better than 9 years old? It seem that American's are keeping they car longer then ever before. Now there are still are a number of Baby Boomers driving gas guzzlers. There are a number of factors that play into the reason for keeping the vehicle so long, but two definite reasons are price or expense of a new car, and the price of gas.

Buying a new car is out of the question, the main reason is the expense of having to make car payments for the next three years plus. Add to that the new car depreciation going out the door of the dealership. You could buy a used car. You have read the ads reading "used cars for sale", and you have seen the vehicle setting in someones front lawn indicating "used car for sale by owner". According to the National Automobile Dealers Association "it's important to buy a used car with a reputation for solid dependability, it's even smarter to buy a used car that is less popular with consumers, meaning it has depreciated more rapidly".

Consider domestic brands Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge. The reliability of U.S. autos have improved within the last 10 years. Think about these brands that are getting high scores for reliability; and can save you quite a few dollars when it come to parts and repair in the future. Remember when looking for used models, the domestics can cost much less for a very similar product, making them when worth a check-out. You might want to know that Consumer Reports routinely grades the domestic premium brands as among the most reliable cars in the world. It should be noted that you should have the used vehicle checked out by a third party mechanic. Uses your local Crag's or Angie's list to provide this service. Even better Google "Used Car Certified Mechanic" for your local area or state.

As of today June 24, 2008 at the Moto Mart in Freeburg, IL (A quite suburb, Baby Boomers community, 30 miles east of St Louis) a gallon of reg gas is $4.13 a gallon. Now what idiot in his or her right mind would pay these high gas prices? That would be anyone trying to get to work or run a family an even a retiree. No one knows what gas prices will be a year from now. No one knows just how much of the family budget dollar will be eaten up by the price of fuel. An if you are on a fixed income the high gas prices are even worst.

One way that you could possible decrease the price of gas is to increase your gas mileage. Use a Hydrogen Generator to run your car on a mixture of both Gas and Water. Water electrolysis is the basis of this technology, and has been around since 1803. The Idea using water fuel has been in existence since that 1990's. Thousands or people have converted their cars to run on water and are achieving amazing results.

Before you put this out with the trash think of this. None of the above information on buying a car is necessary. Your car is not the problem, it is the cost of fuel and not knowing how much it will cost in the future. That is your main problem. Google for the information on Hydrogen Generator (HHO Car Kits) or for using water for fuel. Just read the information and check out the bulletin Boards. An excellent way to try the system is to get together with a friend, buy one those cheap used cars and install the system. Then run the car to see if it works...I know you can't teach old dogs new tricks!

Put this information in the back of you mind until the tough times hit...

The purpose of a car is not to get you from point A to point B. The purpose of a car is to get you from point A to point A and any points in between. Oh no! Where does your car set most of the time?

Again, Thank you for your time.

Discount Auto Insurance Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Whether you are looking for car insurance in Canada, the USA, or somewhere else, finding discount auto insurance can save you plenty of money. The first thing you need to do is get auto insurance online quotes.

Finding discount auto insurance is actually quite simple if you use the online tools that are available to you. There are many insurance companies that will offer you online insurance quotes and then allow you to purchase your insurance right from your computer chair.

What you want to be sure to do is get plenty of quotes. You also need to makes sure you are comparing like coverage. Read all the hidden clauses and get all the details to make sure you are comparing the same coverage. We recommend getting at least 10 quotes.

Buying online insurance can save you both time and money. No more wasted time sitting on hold on the telephone, or driving around town from one insurance company to another, then waiting to see an agent. Now you can accomplish all of this with a few clicks of the mouse.

You can also save up to 40% by shopping online. The insurance industry is very competitive and with the advent of online insurance purchasing it has become even more competitive.

On sites you may still have to wait up to 24 hours to get the quote back but that's not too bad at all. Remember to be truthful on the quote applications.

Insurance companies will validate the information you supply so if you tell little white lies and get a better rate, they'll take it away from your later or worse yet cancel your insurance.

There are many different ways to get a discount. A clean driving record, no tickets, no accident, your age, drivers over 50 often get an extra discount.

The type of coverage you choose can also earn you a bigger discount. For example the higher your deductible the bigger the discount. Different types of vehicles will also earn bigger discounts. The more safety features your vehicle has the more of a discount it will earn. Also the less driving you do the more discount you will earn.

There are many things to consider when buying insurance, all affect your rates. You should decide what coverage you need and how much of it you require before requesting quotes. That way you'll be asking each insurance company for the same coverage.

Some states and provinces require minimum coverages, such as with liability insurance. Be sure you know and understand what coverage is required by law and make sure you include these coverages in your request for quotes.

You should also make sure you choose reputable insurance companies to deal with. Great savings are only a good deal if in the event of an accident your insurance company very quickly handles the claim. Companies that drag claims out and prolong paying are no deal!

So whether your insurance is due or coming due shortly, now is a good time to start checking rates and seeing what type of discounts you can get. So the question is are you ready to save some money?

Barack Obama counters false e-mails with humor Sunday, October 10, 2010

Mahmoud Ahmedi-Barack Hussein Obama-nejad is a terrorist! Barack Hussein Obama's agenda as a secret Muslim Al Qaeda double agent is to take over America's political establishment for the eventual enslavement of the Christian white race while posing as a democrat politician..Obama has denied being muslim (as far we know), yet his America-hating pastor claims to follow a proper religion. Dr. Stephen Colbert has once and for all cleared up the misunderstanding regarding Mr. Hussein Obama's muslimness on the March 13, 2008 episode of his award-winning newsprogram, The Colbert Report by revealing that Mr. Hussein Obama is actually a secret muslim. When the liberal media got tired after a day or two of talking about the 2006 midterm elections, they turned their attention to the 2008 Presidential race and decided that Barack Hussein Obama would be a good candidate. Fox News tried to keep talking about Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton, but was forced to do a few chats about Obama even though they hope, indeed know, that he will be running against and be destroyed by our greatest President ever, George W. Bush, as he moves on to his glorious third term as president. Barack Hussein Obama holds the all-time record for "Worst Possible Name for an American Politician." Not only does his first name sound like Iraq, and his surname sounds a hell of a lot like "Osama," his freakin' middle name is HUSSEIN! Thus Republican claims of his status as the Antichrist are proved. According to ...

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting - 2010 Saturday, October 9, 2010

In early August, I had written concerning the pre-2010 brood count, I highlighted the 2009 report and tried to give my best guess concerning the 2010 South Dakota pheasant hunting season. How did I do? Based on the 2010 report I think I hit it spot on with some areas even showing improvement. The gist of the 2010 brood count is that the overall count shows an increase over the 2009 brood count. In spite of the harsh winter we had and the wet spring that followed. How wet was it? There was an area, that is normally counted, that could not be accessed this year because of the roads having standing water on them.

Pheasants in South Dakota face a lot of adversity, predators, hunting, weather, lack of food. And yet they seem to continue to give us numbers that allow the SD game fish and parks to maintain the daily and possession limit numbers from year to year, 3 daily - 15 in possession.

Before we move into the 2010 report, keep the following in mind. The last time SD pheasant hunters' harvested less than 1 million pheasants, was in 1992, yet the harvest was nearly 970,000 birds. Using that year as the base line and jumping ahead 10 years we find that the average yearly harvest, since 2002, has been 1,778,985. Last year, in 2009, the harvest was 1,648,191. That was the 2nd lowest since 2002 with 2007 reporting just over 2 million birds harvested.

"The 2009 brood route survey indicated that the South Dakota pheasant population had declined 26 percent from the 2008 observation. However, 2007 and 2008 produced two of the highest pheasant counts in more than 40 years. The 2009 survey was 13 percent higher than the 10-year average and was the fourth highest count per mile in the past 45 years."(1)

Looking at the 2010 report, we find, "Results from the 2010 pheasant brood survey indicate the statewide Pheasants Per Mile (PPM) index increased slightly by 3% (6.26 to 6.45) compared to the 2009 index. In comparison to the 10-year average, this year's index is 13% higher (2010 = 6.45, 10-year ave. = 5.71) and the fourth highest statewide PPM since 1963 during the Soil Bank era."(2) This may be because, as I mentioned before, of many areas having high quality cover, due to the snow and rain we had, for the birds to hide in. Affording protection from predators and weather.

The report continues, "the total number of roosters counted during the 2010 survey was down 2% from the 2009 survey (2,045 vs. 2,078). In addition, the number of hens counted was down 4% from last year (3,037 vs. 3,170). Total broods counted increased by 1% (2,581 vs. 2,565), while the statewide average brood size increased by 4% (6.25 vs. 6.03)."(2)

The SDGF&P states, and I agree, "2010 is looking to be as good as or better than the 2009 pheasant hunting harvest was." There is over 700,000 acres of public hunting land in the heart of the South Dakota pheasant hunting area. But maybe you're planning on hunting on private property. I want to remind you to ask for permission first and than honor it. Good hunting ethics goes a long way in keeping the available private lands, just that, available. At any time a farmer can shut down the access to his property due to fences, crops or both being damaged by hunters who don't seem to care or think they have the right to be on private property.

Also, keep in mind that that same great cover that has been protecting the pheasants, through harsh weather and predation, is still going to be there and will make for some hard but rewarding hunting. So strap on your hunting boots and start walking. Not just you, but your dog as well. If you have some wrist weights strap them on too. They will help get those arms back into condition for caring that shotgun. The time to get back into shape is before you hit the fields. Your body and your dog will thank you. Both of you will have a better hunting experience because of it.

Happy Hunting,
Rodger W.

Obama Debt Forgiveness - New Laws Could Save Consumers 50% to 60% on Current Debt Balances Monday, October 4, 2010

Debt collectors usually experience great business when people are having a difficult time paying their bills, since they rely on making making through the never ending ring of the telephone. However, in the recession we are now in, one that could be the worst in decades, the unimaginable is going on: people that usually go after the money are now losing some themselves.

After credit card companies have aided in making the tremendous consumer debt what it is today, they are now coming to understand that many Americans are having an extremely difficult time paying their bills when due, while the economy gets worse.

This has made lenders and the collectors they employ frantic to get every cent they can, before the situation becomes even worse, and they will do this even if it means they have to lose money themselves. More and more, they are allowing payments to be stretched to unimaginable lengths, and they are taking dimes, or even pennies on the dollar, and considering it paid off.

These predatory lenders are not just being helpful. All they are really doing, is attempting to cover their own behinds. Credit card companies and banks are getting prepared for a huge amount of defaults on credit cards, and they are fighting with each other to get their money first. They also consider the fact that the faster people can get their debts paid off, the sooner they will be able to begin borrowing money again.

Although many banks are cutting credit lines, hiking up card fees, and just wary on lending in general, others are actually allowing their customers a little room to move. For example, Bank of America has said that they have waived late fees, dramatically lowered interest rate charges, and for some, they have even reduced loan balances for greater than 700,000 people that held their credit cards in 2008.

Since a greater number of people are getting more in debt, cards like Chase and American Express are doing the same thing for many of their customers. All of the major credit card lenders are telling their collection agents to allow for greater leeway in helping customers that are in dire straits.

People who usually make their money based on the total amount of money they recover, have said people that have had problems and have had to obtain payment extensions, have at least doubled over the past few months. There have also been situations where people who borrowed money, and were about to go over the edge, were given deals that allowed them to pay only 30 to 80% of the money they owed.

This situation is the opposite from a few years ago, when most of the time, consumers fought and lost against credit card companies. In the current situation, as debts continue to soar into the stratosphere, the lenders are the ones that are crying uncle.

$395 billion in bad loans, are what credit card lenders expect to have to write off in the proceeding five years, as reported by the Nilson Report, which is an industry newsletter. This is comparable to the approximate $275 billion that has accrued over the past five years in credit card debt. It is getting more difficult to collect debts such as these. Many times if this happened in the past, lots of consumers would use their home's equity to have a way to pay off credit card loans, or they may have used retirement money, used a debt consolidation loan, or simply asked a friend or family member for help. With the state of the economy being what it is today, consumer have no recourse.

Since they are terrified that people that pay their bills on time may stop, the lenders do not want to say that they are accepting less than the total payment due. Whereas the gigantic loan modification programs that are going on, take thousands of mortgages at the same time, the way credit card customers are being helped is still on a case by case scenario.

Now, lots of debt collectors are letting many borrowers that are behind, take a year to pay off their debts, instead of the standard six months. There are also many lenders that are getting in touch with borrowers as soon as possible, so they do not have to write off the account. Even others are talking to customers they fear might soon get behind in their payments. Much like when credit card companies were trying to be the very first card people used, they are now in the situation where they are attempting to get paid before any others.

The banking industry is now beginning to lobby regulators, so that it is more beneficial to lenders to extend payment terms or forgive indebtedness, since it is projected that millions of additional consumers will be defaulting on their credit cards in the next few months. There was a credit card loan modification recently that was not accepted.

Through this rejected plan, lenders would have been able to forgive around 40% of the total owed them by borrowers over the next five years. The accounting rules that are in place now, say that lenders have to report the loss right after default, but the new plan would have let lenders wait until the part of the debt had been repaid to report it. By doing this, they would be able to write off less later down the road. Borrower would have also been able to defer any tax payments that were owed on the debt that had been forgiven.

In 2005, major changes passed to bankruptcy legislation, and the industry ferociously lobbied, and this seemed to have harmed card debt collections. The mean debt that was discharged in Chapter 7 bankruptcy has grown three times the amount since 2004, according to credit card industry data. In a Chapter 13 bankruptcy, secured lenders such as auto finance companies often shove out lenders that are not secured, like credit card companies, and this has went on and assisted in the card lender's willingness to settle.

Although settling on a deal will avoid credit card cancellation or possible bankruptcy, it will also make the borrower's credit score dip very low for as many as seven years, and this will make it extremely hard and costly to get any new loans. This will make the person's average credit score drop 70 to 130 points, where the strongest borrower have one of 700 or greater.

Through the use of credit card debt settlement companies, debts can be combined into one single payment, and make credit card companies decrease the interest payments and other fees, and also many times the actual principal will be reduced as well. By doing this, the credit card holder can then take off as much 60% off the amount that they owe in debt.

So far I have found one company after hours of research that knows the workings of debt forgiveness programs in and out. They are considered one of the top companies and the help is free. Limestone Mining Within Communities of South Dakota's Black Hills Friday, October 1, 2010

Most of us are familiar with the saying "It takes a village to raise a child". What warm and fuzzy village pundits fail to mention is that it takes a 135 year old law for our Government to do nothing while a gravel pit is mined in the middle of that child's village.

Don't feel naive. I was unfamiliar with this less touted proverb until a family member forwarded me a copy of a letter which he had submitted to our local media outlets in Western South Dakota.

"I treasure the Black Hills. I cringe when I see the unsightly devastation to the Hills that is occurring due to limestone surface mining. As you approach the Hills from the east you no longer see forest merging gently onto prairie, but instead a long brown scar of destruction crawling north from Rapid City toward Black Hawk.

Pete Lien and Sons plan to extend their gravel pit from west of St. Martins, north to Peaceful Pines Rd., and then further north to Anderson Road (a mile north of Black Hawk). This area encompasses beautiful hills, cliffs, and valleys, and is adjoined by many private homes. Most of the area is, in fact, Forest Service land. The Liens have obtained mining claims based on the outdated Mining Act of 1872.

There is no shortage of limestone in the world. Surface mining in the middle of a community is unacceptable. The Liens have worked to be good members of the community, and to try to mitigate the damage from their business operations. I call on them to relocate their mining operations to more remote sites. If not, I call on the government and citizens to put a halt to this outrage.

Mark Anderson"

Mark was asked to remove the mining company's name form his letter before it was published as a Letter to the Editor in our regional paper. While there has been some local reporting on the surface mining scourge in our community, it is not done with enough aggression because of that whole big name/small town thing. Very smart. I understand the need to cover ones backside. Wait a second. Oh crap! Did I leave the name Pete Lien and Sons in the letter above?

Oh well. I guess I'll just maintain my unholy self-preservation by not pointing out to readers that it is no coincident South Dakota politician Chris Lien has the same name. It's just a thought, but I'm personally not sure this family should be handed more power, given their ardent history of meshing gravel quarries with communities.

Okay, so I am obviously not well versed in the art of subtlety and unbiased reporting. Of course, I am not a reporter. But when a satire writer finds out her sleepy family home is about to border a lime-dust-enveloped, noise-filled, tree-less, health-hazard, she gets a touch disgruntled. Deal with it! On the plus side, unlike Letters to the Editor, I am never limited to 250 words! Better still I can, and will, say a companies name when I discuss their publicly noted activities on 'public' lands.

Lien! Lien! Lien! Lien! Lien!

Of course why should newspapers have all the fun? After all, there is a lighter side to letting a surface mine scar up the neighborhood. In fact, it's so light it's airborne. Some call it dust. Lime dust's affects on the health of the village children (and elders) can be read in such light-hearted and whimsically titled articles as, Disabling Pneumoconiosis from Limestone Dust. (LOL?)

This disturbing, yet, light and dusty article was written by those good people who brought us health. Mines operators, kickback purveyors and political lobbyists made no notable contributions. It took all of five minutes to me to find more environmental problems associated with limestone dust. Take for example damaging photosynthesis and respiration in evergreen trees.

You know evergreens right? They are those pesky trees that cover the Black Hills and form the backbone of the web of all life in our region. Weak, lime dust saturated trees are more susceptible to insect damage. Can you say Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic? You can if you live in the South Dakota. The beetles have been decimating the Black Hills for years now. Sprinkling on lime dust make me think of rolling out a red carpet for further infestations.

By the way, evergreens exposed to mineral dust from limestone mining are also dryer and less fire resistant. Fire! Sounds like a bonus for those with homes in the hills. First pneumoconiosis, then lower property values and now an inferno! Yippee! This will make for beautiful sunsets as the last of the tourists flee the unsightly hills taking their tourism dollars with them forever.

Just to be safe residents around the proposed Pete Lien and Sons mine site should consider memorizing OSHA's (osha.gov) list on the "exposure Limits" for Lime Dust. To understand them you'll need high speed internet, a medical dictionary, three slide rules and a secret decoder ring. Fortunately their list of outright health risks is clearer.

"Potential symptoms: Irritation of eyes, skin, mucous membranes; cough, sneezing, rhinorrhea (discharge of thin mucous); lacrimation (discharge of tears).

Health Effects: Nuisance Particulates (HE19)

Affected organs: Eyes, skin, respiratory system"

And what fun loving, forest dwelling family wouldn't want to share years of repertory problems and "rhinorrhea"? Who needs Yatzee®?

It is true other companies are also taking our backyard paradise and putting up less than a parking lot. The time has come for these visual blights and the entire intrusive presence of surface mining to be vanquished from the Black Hills region, no matter which company is conducting these operations.

Our elected officials are here to serve all voters, not just Lien towards big names in small ponds. They must stand vigilant against antiquated legislation - lest we oust antiquated politicians. This is the year 2008. Why are our forest lands, home values and the villages of our children not being protected from a Mining Act that was written 16 year before South Dakota even became a state?

I repeat this act was written 'before' South Dakota existed. Is government on a longer than usual lunch or what? Our population has actually increased since statehood. Neighborhoods should trump Mining Claims enacted in a time when dentures were carved from trees - even if they were those pesky evergreens! The destructive capabilities mankind's machines are now capable of were unfathomable a mere 13 decades ago.

Mark Anderson is correct. We need a rallying cry. South Dakotan's need to stand strong together, demanding a real change. The Black Hills are sacred to all. There is another saying you may be familiar with. "All that is necessary for the forces of evil to take root in the world is for enough good men to do nothing - about a gravel quarry."

What's next? If government doesn't draw the line here, will we soon use school playgrounds as a handy place to burn our old tires? Doesn't Mount Rushmore supposedly belong to the public? I hope no one holds an old claim or Squatter's Rights on an ear lobe or Teddy Roosevelt's left eye. Can I claim Lincoln's chin for my driveway landscaping?

Sorry. Where was I? Oh yea, if this eco-vulgar mining practice does go forth destroying the forest in our community, will our elected politicians at least sew up this loophole, so future neighborhoods will not endure such an offense to our, so called, National Forests?

Meantime, until the forest re-grows to its natural state (e.t.a. 150 thousand years), I ask our elected representatives to lower our real estate values/assessments and collect fewer property taxes from constituents around the mine. You can take the difference out of your own salaries. Meanwhile I am sure Pete Lien and Sons, will be happy to pay all medical costs involved for the residents of the village, their children, their pets and their evergreens.

Disclaimer: The proceeding was an opinion piece. My opinion. Contrary to popular belief, you are permitted to have your own opinion as long as no one holds a 135 year old mining claim on it.
